批評する

近代ヨーロッパにおける批評は絶対主義国家に対する抵抗の中から産声を上げた。17〜18世紀の専制的な体制のもとで、ヨーロッパのブルジョワジーたちは専制政治から来る野蛮な下命ではなく合理的な判断と啓蒙された批評精神に基づく言論空間を作り始めていた。… その原理は、ドライデンが述べたように、「権威ではなく良識と健全な判断力」に基づいていた。

Modern European criticism was born of a struggle against the absolutist state. Within that repressive regime, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, the European bourgeoisie begins to carve out for itself a distinct discursive space, one of rational judgement and enlightened critique rather than of the brutal ukases of an authoritarian politics.
