自由論

国家の価値とは、究極のところ、それを構成する一人一人の人間の価値にほかならない。… 国民をもっと扱いやすい道具にしたてるために、一人一人を萎縮させてしまう国家は、やがて思い知るだろう。小さな人間には、けっして大きなことなどできるはずがないということを。すべてを犠牲にして国家のメカニズムを完成させても、それは結局なんの役にも立つまい。そういう国家は、マシーンが円滑に動くようにするために、一人一人の人間の活力を消し去ろうとするが、それは国家の活力そのものも失わせてしまうのである。

生命

私たちの思考の範疇のうちには、一、多、機械的因果、知的合目的性などどれひとつとして生命の事柄にぴったりとあてはまるもののないことは、私たちもつくづく感じている。…私たちは生きものを手もちのあの枠この枠におしこんでは無駄をしている。どの枠もきしむ。私たちの入れてみたい中身にとってそれはきつすぎ、とにかく堅すぎる。

手

手がなくても絵は描けるけれど、手のない絵はつまらない。長い修練を積み、日頃手を慣らしておくと、とても感度がよくなり、頭で決めていたことを越えて、さらに先へ先へと新たなものを探り当ててくれる。反対に、長い間仕事を休んだ手は、いきなり筆を握らせても、考えたことさえ碌に表すことが出来ない。
